Virtually all modern laboratory glassware is borosilicate glass. It is so widely used in this application due to its chemical and thermal resistance and good optical clarity compared to standard glass supplies. Borosilicate glass has a very low thermal expansion coefficient (3.3 x 10−6/K), about one-third that of ordinary glass. This reduces material stresses caused by temperature gradients, making borosilicate the most suitable kind of glass for cloning cylinders.
